The Pure Land Learning Society was envisioned after World War II by Mr. Lian-Ju Xia, a revered Buddhist teacher devoted to Pure Land practice. His successor, Mr. Huang Nianzu, entrusted Venerable Master Chin Kung with propagating these teachings, leading to the global establishment of Amitabha Buddhist Societies. These societies operate independently, united by their focus on Pure Land study and practice, particularly reciting “Amitabha Buddha.”
「淨宗學會」乃上淨下空老法師,受民初夏蓮居大士傳人念公囑託,於海外極力推動建立的中國古代蓮社之現代化。修學總綱,專依淨土五經一論,其中《無量壽經》,又專依蓮大士會集本《佛說大乘無量壽莊嚴清淨平等覺經》。各學會行政、財務所有運作各自獨立,互助合作。
紐約華藏淨宗學會成立於二零零一年,秉持導師上淨下空老法師之教誨:「佛教是釋迦牟尼佛對一切眾生至善圓滿的教育」「學佛是人生最高享受」,專修專弘淨土念佛法門。以淨宗五經一論為主修經論,其餘諸大、小乘經論,及世間聖賢經書為助修典籍,秉承淨宗諸祖,及近代十三祖印光祖師文鈔語錄為修學依據,以符合淨宗傳承之旨。並遵修導師所編纂之《淨宗同學修行守則》,以三福、六和、三學、六度、十願,為修習總綱。
老法師教誨:「淨宗學會之根本精神,總不離印祖慈訓:「敦倫盡分,閑邪存誠,老實念佛,求生淨土」,以倫理、道德、因果教育自行化他,自度度他。更應重視因果教育,於日常生活中,時時以《感應篇》、《弟子規》、《十善業》為自己言行思想之規範,懺悔改過,歸心彌陀,求生淨土,如此,則不負蓮大士、念公倡建淨宗學會之良苦用心。」
本學會除定期的讀經念佛共修之外,主要的弘法活動爲免費流通中英文佛教書籍,淨空老法師及祖師大德的講經書籍及佛卡、念佛機等。希望籍此因緣爲志同道合的念佛人,提供修福修慧的清淨環境,以成就念佛人菩提道業,往生西方之弘願。
The fundamental practice of Pure Land Buddhism lies in generating the Bodhicitta (the mind of enlightenment) and focusing single-mindedly on the recitation of the Buddha’s name. Generating Bodhicitta is concretely realized through the practice of the Threefold Blessings (三福) and the Ten Good Deeds (十善業道), which are essential for cultivating merit and virtue. This results in the accumulation of good roots and wholesome qualities, which are vital for rebirth in the Pure Land.
